Right!

I was struck during yesterday's playing at just how f'ing great the
guitars sound. Not just the "wow, this is great" feeling I've had
about the guitars (and the album) in general, but this time when I
started listening specifically at the production of the album I
realized that this may be the best I've ever heard guitars recorded.
Richard, a question directly for you: Did you usually mic an amp on
the album, or did you usually use something like Line6's Pod to model
a sound and record direct?
I'll go out on a limb and guess that the physical interaction between
the guitar and amp is important to him and that he usually used an amp,
but he may surprise me totally and say that he used a Pod for most of
the album - in which case I'll go out and buy one of the things
immediately :)
XTC released an album last year (Wasp Star) that made extensive use of
the Pod for its guitars, and I felt that it rendered the guitar sound a
bit sterile, but I may just have been missing Dave Gregory's presence -
he was the real guitar wiz in the band, and was shown the door by Andy
Partridge (XTC's resident genius and egomaniac) shortly into the album's
recording.
Enough rambling - off to work!
