(RL) The production
I was listening to "Cover" this morning and after talking with Richard
about his studio, I made a connection.
Richard has gotten a comment or two about his "home studio" and the
sound of the disc. I think I know what prompted the comments now.
The production on the disk is very unadorned. It's not processed to
within an inch of its life; the reverb wasn't turned up to smooth out
vocals; there are few effects between the guitar and the amp and my
ears. The bass has a sound that Peter Stuart describes as "wooly"
which doesn't have the high-end punching through into the guitar's
space, but instead holds the bottom and doesn't fight for the lead.
In short, this is as straight-forward a rock recording as you can
possibly make, sonically. Ironically, no one seems to do this anymore
because it's so darn easy to fix any flaws in the mix rather than to
play it right and get the pure sound. So now people are used to the
hyper-produced stuff, and a clean recording where you hear everything
distinctly seems somehow wrong or unfinished - surely you'll want to
go back and add all sorts of kewl FX on it, right?
On a side note, I'm hoping to get a rough edit done of the interview
this weekend. I'll let you know when there's something ready for
consumption.
