As you know, the digital world is no stranger to me, but every
time I'd hear someone going on about these Pod things, I'd say that
there's no way they could be that good.

Well knock me over with a feather; I didn't think that nearly as
much was modeled.  I've been saying for a long time now that while
transistors and digital circuits are fine for reproduction, when
making the original music, you can't beat a real tube amp.  Maybe
you still can't beat it, but you can match it for a lot less money and
with less futzy gear!  (I'm always hesitant about taking my Ampeg
Reverberocket out to play.  It's 40 years old now, and I'd hate to
have it fall apart on me, but it just sounds so damn good I can't resist!)

Thanks for giving such a detailed answer.  I think that the guitar
on Cover sounds absolutely great, and it's heartening to know that
it can be done without thousands of dollars' worth of amplification
at ear-bleeding levels!
