I've heard other MD recordings (including one I did myself with a
borrowed unit of Nepalese musicians), and heard nothing in the way
of digital distortion or artifacts. I'm not saying it can't happen,
but I haven't heard it myself, and I'm willing to deal with it for the
convenience of the recording.

Yes, I'm going to the PC in an analog fashion. While I have S/PDIF
ports on my soundcard, I didn't see any MD recorders that had digital
out that were in my price range. There was a version of the MZ-R70 that
had a USB port on it, but that was strictly for downloading music to
the MD, and didn't work the other way! (There goes Sony again, assuming
they know what I use the device for. Remind me to go into my rant on
how Sony and the RIAA effectively killed DAT in the home studio some
time :)

Well, off to work, then to Boston!
