I dunno... there's been an awful lot of treading water from old Eric for
a long time.
Coming as late to the party as I did (not being aware of Eric Clapton
even on the radio until at earliest the late 70s), I have to say that
I really never quite got what the fuss was about until I heard the
Bluesbreakers recordings recently, on that two-disc retrospective. I
mean, Cream was OK, if a bit...overcooked or something, and some of
the Derek and the Dominoes stuff was nice, mostly (IMO) due to Duane
Allman. But hearing the Bluesbreakers explained to me why people
thought the guy was so great.
OTOH, that Bluesbreakers set was _also_ my introduction to early
Peter Green, and I think Peter was even better than EC. (Mick Taylor
was no slouch, either, but I'm giving the honors to Peter on this
one.)
