(RL) Chicago

Went to the Empty Bottle show in Chicago...yeah, that was a while ago,
but I thought maybe one of the locals would post a review first. I drove
in from Detroit...thanks in advance for your condolences.

Steve Wynn and band were razor-sharp...the new material is excellent,
and the bonus Dream Syndicate inclusions in the set didn't hurt, either.
Dancing was obviously permitted, as illustrated by a more than a couple
spectators. It's smart stuff, but not resistant to rump shaking thanks
to a killer rhythm section. Miss them at your peril.

Gotta credit Richard for doing the
three-shows/three-days/three-timezones thing gracefully. While going to
the EMP show would have been great, it was a thrill to get to hear RL
performing on his own terms. We got a set of new and old favorites, many
of which have been mentioned in previous, all scintillatingly performed
by the band. Peter is a riot. Couldn't see Bibi well from where I stood,
but everybody sounded great. It's great that "I Thought" has been
reinterpreted, because I enjoyed the Chris Stamey version, and it
deserves the polish it has received. Other highlights were
"Strangestrange", "Torn Shirt" and the psychotic "Hey Joe" cover. I just
went to see the Fleshtones and they did "Communication Breakdown", then
Richard covers Zeppelin, too...some kinda NYC mini-Led Zep renaissance
going on? Anyway, the playing was spectacular, enveloping, like being
able to walk between the brushstrokes of a great painting. Well worth
the trip.

Unfortunately, I'm not a taper...and am regretting it now. Next time may
require snagging my bro-in-law's fancy-schmancy DAT so as to get it down
for posterity. Hoping next time is soon, and maybe even in Michigan somewhere.
