I find them invaluable.  It might not be what I would do, but Richard's
approach is very unique.  One of the things it's done to me is bring home
how all the "other" scales (pentatonic, dorian, etc) can be seen as an
altered form of the major scale.  This was something I never grasped in 15
years of lessons, but two well written - and well illustrated - pieces
brought the concept home.  And I really like the Alchemical Pages.
